699 metres through tunnels and rock galleries, with the water roaring right beneath you. The local bus takes you to the ski stadium in 10 minutes; from there, it’s another 25-minute walk. In winter, there are icicles and torchlight walks.

Turquoise water, small islands and, towering above them, the Zugspitze. A full circuit is a good 7 kilometres; the route is flat and easily manageable even with children. You can get there by the rack-and-pinion railway, which departs right next to your hotel.

It’s about an hour’s drive and you’ll find yourself standing in front of Bavaria’s most famous castle. Tip: book your tickets online in advance – they often sell out on the day. You’ll get the best view from the Marienbrücke.

Crystal-clear water, pools and narrow paths right along the rock face. The gorge is free to visit and much quieter than the larger gorges. Perfect for half a day, after which it’s off to the pool.

Fancy a leisurely walk to the alpine pasture or up to the Rauschberg? Around Ruhpolding, you’ll find walks to suit every fitness level. And when your legs have had enough, you can simply take the cable car back down.

The Biathlon World Cup is taking place at the Chiemgau Arena, and you can hit the cross-country trails right next to it yourself. There are also toboggan runs, winter walking trails and, in the evenings, a sauna instead of shovelling snow.
