Weißbach Gorge:
Hiking amongst rock faces and waterfalls

Roaring water, smooth, polished rock and footbridges suspended directly above the stream: the Weißbach Gorge is one of the quieter gorge walks in the Berchtesgadener Land. It lies between Inzell, Weißbach an der Alpenstraße and Schneizlreuth, just below the German Alpine Road. From Ruhpolding it takes about 20 minutes to get there by car. Here you can find out what the walk is like, where to start and what to pack.

Weißbach Gorge

The Weißbach has carved its way deep into the rock. Today, a narrow path runs right through the centre of this gorge. You walk along steps, wooden walkways and bridges, past green pools and small waterfalls. In the past, this was less about hiking. Lumberjacks floated logs down the stream, as the wood was needed for salt production in the region.

Where are you starting from?

In the south: at the Samer Bridge near Schneizlreuth, close to the official walkers’ car park
In the north: in Weißbach on the Alpenstraße. Behind the Stabach inn, follow the Sägmühlweg, past the sawmill and through the spruce forest to the gorge.

How to extend the walk

There isn’t a circular route through the gorge itself. The path is a straight route from A to B. So you either turn back, take the bus back, or add on a bit more:

Weißbach Falls and the Salt Works Monument: You can reach both from the end of the gorge.
Around the Falkenstein: a flat circular walk, about 1 hour 45 minutes.
Source of the Weißbach: about 20 minutes’ walk from the Zwing.
Long loop via Thumsee: around 16.5 kilometres and about five hours. This is best suited to people in good physical condition.

Well prepared for the gorge

The steps and footbridges are often wet, even if it hasn’t rained for days. Small rivulets run across the path, and you’re bound to get splashed a bit by the waterfalls. With the right kit, that won’t bother you.

Your packing list for the Weißbach Gorge:

Hiking boots with grippy soles; trainers tend to slip easily.

A rain jacket to protect against sea spray and sudden showers

A warm layer, e.g. a fleece jacket, as it gets chilly quickly between the rock faces

A water bottle and a snack for break time

A change of clothes and socks waiting in the car

A small towel, in case you fancy dipping your feet in the stream

Carry your young children instead of using a pushchair

A mobile phone with a fully charged battery and the bus timetable, if you’re only walking in one direction

In the event of heavy rain, storms or thunderstorms, it’s best to give the gorge a miss. That’s when there’s a greater risk of rocks coming loose. On hot summer’s days, however, it’s the perfect place to visit, as it stays pleasantly cool in the gorge.

With children or a dog

Pushchairs have to stay in the car – the paths are too narrow and too steep for them. A baby carrier is the better choice for small children. Older children who can already walk confidently usually have a right good time here. Still, keep them close to you on the narrow sections.

You can bring your dog along. However, many footbridges are made of grating, and not all four-legged friends like that. Some footbridges have an extra strip for dog paws. Your dog might need a bit of time to get used to it, especially at the start. It’s safer to keep him on a lead on the narrow sections.

Directions & Parking

By car

From aja Ruhpolding, drive via Inzell along the German Alpine Road (B 305) to Weißbach an der Alpenstraße. The distance is about 15 kilometres and the journey takes around 20 minutes. Continue along the B 305 to the Samer Bridge near Schneizlreuth. Before setting off, do check briefly to see if there are any road closures at the moment.

Parking

The official car park for walkers is in Schneizlreuth. Please only park your car in designated areas. A car park that was once frequently used is now closed.

By bus

The RVO bus 9526 runs to Weißbach an der Alpenstraße, stopping at the ‘Weißbach Alpenhotel’ bus stop. Do check the timetable beforehand, as the buses don’t run very often.
