5 Destinations for your
next Baltic Sea Getaway
Grömitz on the Bay of Lübeck
Grömitz has five miles of sandy beach (about eight kilometres) and room for everyone. It's not a hidden gem, it's a proper classic among Baltic Sea resorts. At the end of the nearly 400-metre pier, a diving bell waits: dry feet, straight down under the water, crabs and jellyfish included. A little further along stands the Ferris wheel: ten minutes up, and you get the whole Bay of Lübeck laid out below you. Grömitz and the surrounding area also have plenty on offer for families with kids.
Travemünde, near Lübeck
Travemünde is where the river Trave flows into the Baltic Sea and where ferries to Scandinavia glide past beach chairs on the shore. The old lighthouse here is the oldest on Germany's Baltic coast, built in 1539. Across the water on the Priwall peninsula, things are quieter: more dunes, less bustle. A small ferry gets you from one side to the other in four minutes.
Warnemünde, near Rostock
Warnemünde is Rostock's seaside resort and also Germany's biggest Baltic Sea cruise port. When a giant ship pulls in, half the town comes out to watch. Along the "Alter Strom" canal, colourful fishermen's cottages line the water, and the smell of smoked fish drifts through the air. Everyone recognises the lighthouse and the round Teepott building next to it. Warnemünde's beach shelves in gently, making it one of the most child-friendly stretches on the coast, and right by the lighthouse there's a playground with a climbing tower and slide.
Göhren, Rügen Island
Göhren lies in the southeast of the island, on the Mönchgut peninsula, the quieter, less crowded side of Rügen. At the North Beach, a cable car takes you comfortably down to the water from town, a detail that never fails to delight kids. From there, you can hop on the "Rasender Roland," a narrow-gauge steam train that's been chugging between the seaside resorts for over 100 years.
Bansin, Usedom Island
Bansin is one of the "Imperial Resorts" and sits between Ahlbeck and Heringsdorf. The beach promenade connects all three and makes for a lovely walk that never really seems to end. The beach here slopes in gently, ideal if the kids aren't confident swimmers yet. Right behind it starts a pine forest, handy shade on hot days. Usedom, by the way, is Germany's sunniest region. That's not a marketing line, it's in the weather statistics.

Depends what you're after. Grömitz for the diving bell and Ferris wheel, Göhren on Rügen for peace and quiet and the steam train, Travemünde for harbour charm, Warnemünde for a mix of city and beach, Usedom for the seaside architecture, plenty of sun, and an especially gentle beach.
