Origin & nature
of Lake Eibsee

The Eibsee lies at the foot of the Zugspitze, around 1,000 metres above sea level, and is one of Bavaria’s best-known lakes. Its origins date back to the end of the last Ice Age: as the Isar-Loisach Glacier retreated, the resulting depression filled with meltwater – and Lake Eibsee was formed.

Some 3,750 years later, a major rockslide transformed the area once again. The massive rock masses shaped the lake’s current landscape, with its small islands and shallow areas. This distinctive structure continues to make the Eibsee a special natural experience to this day.

Surrounded by mountains and with its clear, turquoise-blue water, the Eibsee is now a protected natural area and provides a habitat for numerous plant and animal species.

More about the Zugspitze
Why is the water in Lake Eibsee so turquoise?

The turquoise-blue colour comes from particles of limestone in the water, which reflect the sunlight. Depending on the angle of the light, the lake shimmers in different shades, ranging from turquoise to emerald green to deep blue. Added to this is the extreme clarity: you can see every stone on the lake bed.
